LOGO
The new National Civil War Logo is intended to modernize the NCWM brand. The logo mark is representative of the human side of the Civil War, an emphasis of the institution. The mark is paired with a slab serif typeface, meant to connect back to the wood block posters of the era. The mark is shown primarily in black, to provide a serious, tone. This reflects the tragedy of the war itself. The main mark is shown with texture, to bring an aged aspect to the brand. Below are the final versions of the logo mark.
SELF-MAILER
The self-mailer is used to market the museum, and its new website. The mailer combines the marketing phrase “Reflecting Our Past, Lessons For Our Future” with traditional Civil War portraits. The portraits show different people who took part in the war itself. In the background of the mailer you will find historic battle maps. As you view the mailer, you first see “reflecting on our past”, then as you open the piece, you are greeted with “lessons for our future”. This is paired with a Union soldier, Abraham Lincoln, and Fredrick Douglas. This is meant to convey the idea of race relations, and the lessons we should take from the Civil War of equality and freedom. The mailer contains a QR code, which once scanned would take you to the new NCWM website, allowing you to take the NCWM Reflecting Our Past Quiz. Which will tell you what you would’ve done during the Civil War.
MARKETING POSTERS
The four marketing posters are intended to drive viewers to visit the museum, and to visit NCWM’s new website. The marketing posters utilize authentic Civil War portraits and color overlays to create an eye catching design. A texture overlay is also placed over the images, and the colors are matched, to create the illusion that they are a set of images. This is combined with the marketing phrase “Reflecting our past, lessons for our future.” The goal being to encourage a viewer to contemplate what choices they would’ve made if they were alive during the Civil War era.
DESKTOP SITE
The NCWM website is designed to have a elegant, easy to navigate layout, while also paying homage to the historical aspects of the Civil War. The site is created utilizing a grid system, allowing for an organized layout. The landing pages for the museum utilizes accurate historical maps of the country, and of battlefields placed over a textured background. This is paired with images of recognizable historical figures blended with imagery of common soldiers.
The mobile site for the National Civil War Museum utilizes primarily a one column layout, with an occasional two column dispersed through. Columns were used frequently to allow for scaling between mobile and desktop.
